Caroline didn’t enjoy doing delivery duty, and absolutely hated lying to her coworkers—especially Maria since she was currently borrowing the woman’s car—but a special delivery with a huge tip? That was hard to turn down.

Especially now that the garage mechanic had found even more work to do on her seventeen-year-old Chevy. She was lucky that it even worked half the time, but once one thing goes wrong with a car then more was always sure to follow. The timing belt needed replacing, there was a crack in something really important (but she couldn’t remember what), her breaks needed work, and her four bald tires should be replaced. There was more, but those were the big ones. She couldn’t afford anything, but had to get the timing belt, naturally the biggest ticket item, done. Right now, the mechanic had even said that he didn’t feel right letting her drive the car.

The garage was waiting for a special part that was on order to be delivered. Special of course meaning expensive.

The smell of the breakfast tacos filled the car, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten breakfast yet. Sometimes orders were returned at the restaurant—whether they were incorrectly prepared or some other mistake—which meant free food if she wrapped it up before her boss noticing.

God, she hated being this poor. She had eaten three meals this way over the last week. She was actually tired of eating Mexican food, but it was one of her favorites. Plus, the restaurant made the best burritos.

Her stomach growled.

She had already pocketed twenty dollars when the man placed the order, and he promised another twenty when she delivered it today—all of which was above the normal delivery charges. The only caveats were that she needed to deliver the food and she needed to have it set up by nine o’clock. The fact that he specifically asked that she make the delivery herself made her feel uncomfortable, but she was delivering to an office building. She promised herself that if she was ever to get such a request to go to a private residence that she’d at least bring someone else along.

Glancing at the car’s clock, she was making good time.

The man who placed the order seemed really nice, especially since he was so particular about tipping—and tipping well. She still couldn’t believe he had walked into the restaurant to give her that ten-dollar tip because he hadn’t left enough of one the day before. Only someone good of heart would return to do that.

Telling her co-workers that he was an old friend was only a minor white lie so she could easily get the delivery order herself. Overall, there was no harm done.

She stopped at a red light and checked the name and address once more. ‘Ralph Larimer’ and the street was downtown just a few blocks from the library. She knew exactly where to go.

Caroline parked the car and began unloading the food. Her muscles tensed as she entered Westgate Plaza, pulling a small cart behind her filled with breakfast tacos, drinks, and salsa.
